What is your Ayurvedic mind-body type? Are you a Vata person? Are you a Pitta person? Are you a Kapha person? And what is the best music for your dosha?

In other words, what is the most healing music for you? It depends in good measure on your specific mind-body type. In Ayurveda, there are three basic mind-body types or “doshas”: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Ayurveda recommends specific foods, diets and lifestyles for each dosha, in order to maintain proper health (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual) pursuant to a holistic view that takes into account all the energies of your specific, unique personal constitution.

As part of this holistic hologram, Ayurveda recommends also different types of music for each of the doshas, for healing purposes. Pursuant to Ayurveda, if when you choose music according to our dosha type you can deepen your ability to attain a balanced state of health and wellness.

So what music is good for your dosha? I will explain this concept further and offer you below some explanations and music playlists with healing music I have composed for each dosha, which you can listen to and stream on this page or on Spotify.

Music for VATA types

(Ether and Air)

If you are a Vata person, you are creative, enthusiastic and communicative, full of ideas and with a great imagination and intuition. But when you are out of balance (i.e. with too much Vata energies), you suffer from anxiety, insomnia, poor digestion, constipation, feel nervous, overwhelmed, or even fearful, spacey and ungrounded.

So for Vata people Ayurveda recommends peaceful, calming, pacifying music with soft, low, and mellow tones. Choose meditative music, new age music, classical Indian music, spiritual music with mantras, or sound healing music with crystal bowls, gongs, shamanic drums and chimes. Instrumental or orchestral music with string instruments (violin, cello, bass), or music with soft wind instruments like the Indian flute or the native American flute are also beneficial for Vata types.

The music tempo should be slow, not fast. Vata people can be over-excited and thrown out of balance by fast, electric music like hard rock, techno or heavy metal and therefore are best served by avoiding these genres and focusing instead on music that brings calm to their sensitive nervous systems.

For the same reasons, Vata types benefit greatly from music tuned to 432 Hz, which has a pacifying effect on their nerves and emotions.

Music for PITTA types

(Fire and Water)

If you are a Pitta person (Fire and Water), you have a sharp mind and are a goal-oriented, ambitious, decisive, very active person who is focused on growth, competitiveness and productivity. But when you are out of balance (i.e. with too much Pitta energies) you become impatient, irritable, angry, very judgmental, with too much criticism and may suffer from ailments like high blood pressure, gastritis, heartburn, skin rashes or burning sensations in different parts of your body.

So for Pitta people Ayurveda recommends music that “cools you down”. Choose soft rhytmic music with a mid-range tone, music with nature sounds (especially if it includes waterfall sounds or ocean waves, since water pacifies the excess of fire), love songs or music with positive lyrics. Pitta types should avoid music with negative, hateful or angry lyrics. Basically, any music that gives you a “feel good” vibe or a “love you” vibe is good. It may be classical music, instrumental music, chill down music, pop music, R&B music, blues music, classical jazz, folk music, etc. as long as it cools you down.

Pitta types can also benefit from music tuned to 432 Hz, which is felt more in the heart than in the mind and therefore can reduce anger while giving you more focus.

Music for KAPHA types

(Earth and Water)

If you are a Kapha person, you are a kind, patient and supportive person who has a good stamina and is persistent and tolerant. But when you are out of balance (i.e. too much Kapha energy) you may become overweight and produce excess mucus secretions, or feel sluggish, “blue”, fatigued, lethargic, complacent, easily hurt and depressed,

So for Kapha people Ayurveda recommends music that “gets you going”, i.e. music that has a stimulating effect on your mind and emotions. Choose music that energizes you and prompts you to move, like dancing music, epic music, salsa music, latin music, classic rock-n-roll, rap music, etc. Generally speaking, choose music that is upbeat and uplifting.
